$1.5M funding for sylvaculture lab facility

Val d’Or, QC – The federal government says it is providing $1,550,181 to support the applied research and technology transfer activities of the Universite du Quebec en Abitibi-Temiscamingue’s Laboratoire de recherche en ligniculture et sylviculture intensive.

The three-year project consists of three components: developing regional expertise in intensive silviculture in the boreal forest, evaluating the impact of silvicultural practices on wildlife, and implementing practices designed to improve timber yields.

The technology transfer component of the project involves implementing customized intensive silviculture practices to enhance timber yields, particularly in Aboriginal and rural communities. In addition to the activities in Abitibi-Temiscamingue, some research projects will also be conducted at the Waswanipi Cree Model Forest. Other projects will be carried out by the Cegep de l’Abitibi-Temiscamingue’s Centre de traitement des residus industriels and by the Harricana School Board’s Corporation Foret et Recherche Harricana.
