New round of research chairs announced by federal government

Charlottetown, PEI – John ApSimon, executive director of the Canada Research Chairs Program, welcomed the growing force of Canadian research talent as he announced today, on behalf of the David L Emerson, minister of industry and minister responsible for the Canada Research Chairs Program, $62.9 million in funding for 79 Canada Research Chairs.

Dr Cai Song, an internationally known researcher in the emerging field of psychoneuroimmunologythe study of how the immune and nervous systems affect mental healthis one of the University of Prince Edward Island’s two new Canada Research Chairs.

Dr Song and her research team are working to understand the causes of brain inflammation, which often leads to disturbances in thinking, memory and behaviourall symptoms of degenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s.

"The great benefit of receiving a Canada Research Chair," she says, "is that it will enable me to focus on devising effective treatments, with minimal side-effects, that can halt the progression of these diseases, and even prevent them from developing in the first place."

The announcement also includes $8.1 million from the Canada Foundation for Innovation (CFI) to fund essential research infrastructure, ranging from computer equipment for information databases to housing for laboratory facilities.

"We can say with conviction that Canada is becoming a place where world-class researchers want to be,” says Carmen Charette, senior vice-president of CFI. "This CFI investment will further develop Canada’s global reputation as a place where outstanding research and training are being conducted."
