Montreal, QC – Dr Tarik Moroy has been appointed president and scientific director of the Institut de recherches cliniques de Montral (IRCM).
Dr Moroy is currently a professor of molecular cell biology at the Institute for Cell Biology, University of Duisburg-Essen, Germany. He has also held management positions during the past 10 years, notably as executive director. Since 2003, he has also served as director of the Medical Biotechnology Centre at the University of Duisburg-Essen, a cluster of 40 laboratories from the Faculty of Medicine and the Faculty of Biology and Chemistry.
Dr Moroy obtained his PhD in biochemistry from the University of Ludwig-Maximilians in Munich, Germany, in 1987, followed by postdoctoral fellowships at the Institut Pasteur in Paris and Columbia University in New York. He is fluent in English, French, and German.
Dr Moroy will assume his new duties at the end of the first quarter of 2006, making periodic visits to the Institute until then. Meanwhile, Dr Louis- Gilles Durand will continue to serve as acting president and scientific director.
Dr Moroy’s arrival marks a new stage in the IRCM’s development, which completed an expansion last December. Since the beginning of the year, seven new researchers have set up their laboratories and are putting together their research teams. Dr Moroy’s mandate will be to pursue the growth and continue to make the IRCM a world-class institution for biomedical research and a top training site for upcoming generations of bright young scientists. Dr Moroy will also transfer his research activities to the institute.
