$2.3M additional funding supports Marine Biotechnology Research Centre

Rimouski, QC – The federal government has committed to an additional $2.3 million in funding for the Marine Biotechnology Research Centre (MBRC). The money will support the centre’s R&D and technology transfer activities for the next three years.

The Marine Biotechnology Research Centre is the only marine centre of its kind in Canada. It is part of a maritime science and technology cluster in the Bas-Saint-Laurent. Through its research, technology transfer, business services and technological watch activities, it has become a hub for the development of marine biotechnologies and their transfer to Quebec and other Canadian firms.

The funding adds to a previous contribution of $7.65 million awarded for the centre’s establishment and start-up, and brings the government’s support of the MBRC to nearly $10 million.

The MBRC places infrastructure and specialized teams focussed on achieving marketable results at the disposal of biotech firms. It acts as an intermediary between regional research organizations and private firms seeking to develop commercial applications based on this research. It also brings about alliances and partnerships at the regional, national and international levels.
