A fully automated method for quantitative determination of volatile organic components (VOCs)in food packaging using an unattended standard addition method followed by headspace (HS) sampling and gas chromatography/mass spectrometry analysis. Can be found in Application Note 1010: Unattended Automated Standard Addition Headspace Analysis for the Quantitative Determination of VOCs in Food Packaging. These noteres demonstrate that this approach enables high accuracy in quantification and high sample throughput while minimizing error-prone manual manipulations. Most of the residual solvents analyzed showed an individual limit of quantitation In the past, use of a dedicated autosampler for HS analysis has been problematic due to the adsorption and migration characteristics of food packaging materials that make external calibration unreliable. Although standard addition calibration has been more suitable for these difficult matrixes, it has historically been a time-consuming and error-prone procedure. With this new method, the same robotic sampler used for the HS analysis also performs sample preparation and runs the quantification sequence automatically without user involvement.
