$490M funding extends work on Canada’s chemicals management plan

Ottawa, ON – Funding of $491.8 million over the next five years will be used to complete the next phase of Canada’s Chemicals Management Plan (CMP), the federal government has announced. The program is the country’s comprehensive and integrated strategy for identifying and taking action on potentially harmful substances.

During this phase, the remaining 1550 substances of the 4300 chemicals identified as priorities under the CMP will be assessed. The government-wide approach, which includes research, assessing substances, testing products, evaluating older pesticides, and developing new environmental rules for pharmaceutical products, will support the global goal of sound chemicals management by 2020.

“In this phase of the Chemicals Management Plan, our scientists will continue their important work,” said Catherine McKenna, minister of environment and climate change. “This funding is not only an investment in the health of our economy but also, more importantly, in the health and environment of future generations of Canadians.”
