$6.25M in NSERC funding for math research consortium

Vancouver, BC – The Pacific Institute of Mathematical Sciences, an international mathematics consortium headquartered at the University of British Columbia, has been awarded $6.25 million in funding from the Natural Sciences and Engineering Council of Canada (NSERC).

“We have received a 13 percent increase in NSERC funding for our institute over the next five years,” says Alejandro Adem, director of PIMS and professor in UBC’s Dept. of Mathematics. “This is wonderful news for mathematical scientists in Western Canada. The excellence of our programs was recognized by this grant and awarded in a highly competitive environment.”

The award, which was given through NSERC’s Collaborative and Thematic Resources Support in Mathematics and Statistics Program competition, will go toward scientific training and industrial activities throughout Western Canada, and will support innovation in the mathematical sciences. It will also provide dedicated support for the Canadian Statistical Sciences Institute and the Atlantic Association for Research in the Mathematical Sciences.
