Marine biotech research centre receives nearly $1M funding for equipment

Rimouski, QC – May 7, 2004 – The federal government has made a $900,000 contribution to the Centre de recherche sur les biotechnologies marines (CRBM), a marine biotechnology research centre in Rimouski.

The announcement was made at the official inauguration of the CRBM, the only French-language research facility of its kind that specializes in marine biotechnology with an emphasis on biomolecules in cold water. This funding from Canada Economic Development will enable Rimouski’s CRBM to purchase new cutting-edge equipment needed for its research activities. This new equipment will be part of a regional bank of technological equipment, complementing the range of equipment currently available in the region, and will be made available to all regional partners operating in the marine sciences sector.

“The acquisition of leading-edge equipment is an important asset in the development of R&D in the region by helping to create a highly-stimulating research environment with vast scientific potential,” says Denis Paradis, minister of state. “These elements are essential to ensuring the presence in the region of researchers whose work is at the very heart of efforts to promote and position marine science and technology as a sector of growth in the Lower St Lawrence.”

Canada Economic Development’s mandate is to promote the economic development of the regions of Quebec.
