Nearly $12M from CIHR for Ottawa researchers

Ottawa, ON – Researchers at the University of Ottawa and its affiliate research institutions have received $11.9 million in operating grants from the Canadian Institutes of Health Research.

The funding will be distributed among 27 projects at the university and its partner institutions, the University of Ottawa Heart Institute, the Ottawa Health Research Institute, CHEO, and the University of Ottawa Institute for Mental Health Research.

In terms of funding awarded, the university ranked sixth nationally and received more funding than any other Ontario university with the exception of the University of Toronto. The Ottawa Health Research Institute was a major contributor to the success, with 12 projects receiving $5.4 million in operating grants.

“We’re proud to see so many of our researchers being recognized by their peers for support. This set of results reconfirms the University of Ottawa’s position as one of Canda’s top research-intensive universities,” says Dr Peter Walker, dean of the Faculty of Medicine at the university.

The research projects range from assessing the validity of a new decision rule for CAT scans in children with head injuries to diagnostic and therapeutic strategies for obese people with asthma to the role of stem cells in re-creating and replacing diseased arteries in the heart to studying the health of caregivers of children with disabilities.
